The Organizing Committee of the Mountain Race of Syrrako with institutional supporters the Municipality of North Tzoumerka and the N.P.D.D. “Georgios Gianniotis”, with co-organizers the Association of Runners of Ioannina, the Tourist Enterprises of Syrrakos, the Mountaineering Club of Syrrakos (OROS), the Association of Breeders of Syrrakos and the Association of Syrrakians of Ioannina organizes on Sunday 10 July 2022 the 4th Syrrako Trail Run.

The date of the event is a day of remembrance for the destruction of Syrrako and the violent uprooting of thousands of its inhabitants from their ancestral homes, during the uprising against the Turkish yoke in early July 1821.

The road race will be held on the paths of the gorge of Chrousias, between the two historical communities of Syrrako and Kalarryta and will pass through the forest of “Pantza”, exactly where the inhabitants of the two communities fought, fought and then took refuge in the summer of 1821.

It is a race that aims to connect history with the environment and culture with the sporting ideal.

Rules of the race:

DATE OF THE EVENT: Sunday, July 10, 2022.

START – FINISH: The start will be at 09:30 in the central square of Syrrako and the finish will be in the same place.

SECRETARIAT: The secretariat of the race will be at the starting area and participants will be able to receive their entry number on Sunday 10-7-2022 from 07:45 am. until 09:00 am. There they will be able to store in closed bags in a space guarded by volunteers, the clothes that will be needed to change after their completion.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Technical information of the race will be made at the Secretariat at 9:15 a.m.

RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE: A prerequisite for participation in the race is that the runners have completed the 18th year of their age. Runners under the age of 18 will only be able to participate with a responsible statement from their guardian.

REGISTRATION – ENTRY FEE: Registrations will be made through the registration process on the registration form:


Registrations can be made at the Secretariat of the race up to half an hour before the start, if the required number of entries has not been completed. The maximum number of athletes is set at 300 and registration order of priority will be observed. The registration will be updated with the payment of the participation cost.

TRANSPORT BY BUS FROM IOANNINA: For athletes who wish, there will be a possibility to go to Syrrako by bus which will depart at 7:00 am. of the 10th of July from the Headquarters of the Region of Epirus (Dodonis Avenue, Ioannina). The cost of travel and return for athletes will be 5 euros. For transportation by bus for escorts and family members of the athletes, after consultation with the organizers.

ROUTE: Central square of Syrrakou-stop “Lefka” – fountain “Noutsi” – entrance of the path to the bridge Kouiasas-forest of Pantza- bridge of Kouiasas – Kalarrytes – area “Stratones” – “Skala” – Iron bridge of Chrousia – Central square of Syrrako. The route of the race follows a dirt and marked path. Temporary signage will be placed on the eve of the race, so that the route is as clear as possible. At the same time, the presence of volunteers in many parts of the route eliminates the possibility of a runner deviating from it.

DISTANCE: 11,080 m. (The route includes 1,800 m. Asphalt road, 950 m. Paved road within the settlements, 3,330 m. Dirt road in the forest, 5,000 m. Dirt road in the ravine of Chrousia). ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: +746 meters.





EXCLUSION TIME LIMITS: The timing stops, 3 hours after the start of the race.

AWARD-BENEFITS OF COMPETITORS: After the finish, the awards will be given with cups to the first three winners of the general categories, cups for the first winners of the other categories and medals to all runners. Souvenir technical t-shirt (extremely beautiful for a walk or for training use) along with sandwiches and water will be given to all athletes when they finish in special bags.

TIMING: Athletes will be given individual electronic timing chips. The timing will be done by an electronic timing company.

MOVE ON THE TRAIL: Athletes are required to move on the trail without forming groups that extend in width, thus preventing athletes who want to overtake. When an athlete is warned that he has to step aside to overtake, he must in any case respect the fellow athlete.

CHECKPOINTS: There will be checkpoints along the route. Athletes are required to have their number in a prominent place in order to be recorded by the judges. Refusing to show the number means exclusion.

OBJECTIONS: Objections for any reason are made only by the athlete himself, no later than 30 minutes after the finish. The decision of the objection committee, which consists of the technical director of the race, the members of the technical committee and the responsible stationmasters in whose area of responsibility the incident was recorded, is issued no later than the time of the awards and is final.

SAFETY: The organization undertakes to monitor the course of the race with specialized staff in matters of safety, rescue and medical assistance to athletes in need. In cases where safety staff and judges indicate to athletes that they need to change direction for safety reasons, athletes are required to obey. Denial of compliance means exclusion. There will be the possibility of medical care by specialized staff that will deal with the problems of the athletes. If a race doctor reports that an athlete is in poor condition and unable to continue, then the athlete is required to provide his number and follow his instructions.

ROUTE MODIFICATION – POSTPONEMENT: In case of extreme weather conditions, the organization reserves the right to modify the route or to postpone for a short or longer period of time the start of the races, always guided by the physical integrity of the athletes.

PENALTIES: All the following violations carry the penalty of exclusion: Failure to show or alter the number of entries, throwing trash, obstructing another athlete or unsportsmanlike conduct, rudeness – inappropriate behavior towards the organizing committee, judges, volunteers, etc. non-presence at a control station, refusal to be examined by a doctor of the organization if this is deemed necessary at any time during the match.

LIABILITY DISCLAIMER: The event is not responsible for the death, injury or any damage to the health of the competitors, who by submitting the application, declare that they are aware of the dangers that exist in the mountain environment and assure that their health condition is good and allows them to compete, and have recently been examined by a doctor. Athletes themselves are required to undergo regular medical preventive examinations in order to check their state of health. Also the organizer disclaims any responsibility for destruction, theft, loss, etc. of the personal property of the participants. Participants will not have the right to turn against the organizer for any damage that may be caused to their equipment or vehicle.

AMENDMENT OF RULES: The organizers reserve the right to modify the rules of the race. In any case, changes of the race will be posted on the website of the event.

OTHER REMARKS: It is strictly forbidden to throw any kind of object along the route. There is a special plastic garbage bag at each filling station. Throwing packing materials at any point along the route beyond the predetermined ones will result in the athlete being disqualified. The shortening (cutting) of the route is prohibited and is punished with exclusion. Each competitor has a responsibility and is obliged to carefully monitor the warning signs of the right direction. All participants are obliged to fully respect the rules described above and to obey any suggestions of the judges of the race. Failure to comply with the rules or instructions of the judges, carries the penalty of exclusion. Any other authorized person from the event, has the opportunity to also record any violation that comes to his notice and submit it for examination to the Race Committee.

CONDITION FOR PARTICIPATION: A necessary condition for someone to participate in the race is during the registration process to declare responsibly that he has learned the rules of the race and that he accepts them fully and unconditionally. Registration will be updated upon payment of the participation fee.

AFTER THE RACE: The organizers will have provided free food for the athletes, escorts and volunteers. Events with music, prize draws and other surprises will follow.
